Method
- Start by dicing the fresh tuna into small, even pieces; ensure uniform size for proper marinating (about 3-4 minutes).
- Place the diced tuna in a mixing bowl and pour lime juice over it. Let sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fish changes color and textures as if 'cooked'.
- Mix in the finely chopped red onion and minced jalapeño for added crunch and heat. Stir well to combine, about 1 minute.
- Add the chopped cilantro to the mixture and stir for 30 seconds to incorporate the herb flavor.
- Season with salt to taste, starting with 1/4 teaspoon, and adjust as desired.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to meld further.
- If using, gently fold in the diced avocado just before serving for creaminess, about 1 minute.
- Transfer the ceviche to a serving dish. Garnish with extra cilantro or avocado if desired, serve immediately.
Notes
Always use the freshest fish possible for the best flavor and safety. Do not over-marinade to avoid mushy texture.
