Ingredients

Main
  • 6 medium-sized apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for cooking

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Large pot or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Peeler and knife

Method

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples to prepare them for even cooking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and salt; toss to coat.
  3. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat to create a rich cooking base.
  4. Add the apple mixture to the pot and stir to evenly coat the apples with the buttery spice mix.
  5. Allow the filling to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until apples soften.
  6. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens and the apples are fork-tender, about 5 more minutes.
  7. Remove the pot from heat and let the filling cool slightly before using to prevent a soggy crust.
  8. Use immediately in your pie or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

Let the filling cool entirely before pouring it into your dough to prevent a soggy bottom!
