- In a mixing bowl, combine the Bisquick mix, milk, and chopped fresh herbs, stirring until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the dumplings tender.
- Season the dumpling mixture by adding black pepper, if desired, and stir briefly to incorporate.
- Ensure the broth is at a gentle boil, then use a spoon to drop heaping tablespoons of the dumpling mixture into the pot.
- Cover the pot and let the dumplings steam for 10 to 12 minutes without lifting the lid to retain steam.
- After 10 minutes, remove the lid and check that the dumplings are cooked through; they should be fluffy and springy to the touch.
