Ingredients

Main
  • 4 hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 2 cups chili homemade or canned
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup diced onions optional
  • 1 tablespoon mustard optional

Equipment

  • Large pot or saucepan
  • Grill or skillet
  • Wooden spoon
  • Serving platter
  • Knife for slicing

Method

  1. Heat 2 cups chili in a large pot over medium heat until bubbling, about 5 minutes.
  2. Grill or pan-fry 4 hot dogs over medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes, until browned and heated through.
  3. Toast 4 hot dog buns on the grill or in a toaster oven at 350°F (175°C) for 2-3 minutes, until lightly browned.
  4. Place each hot dog into a toasted bun.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of warm chili over each hot dog.
  6. Top each hot dog with shredded cheddar cheese while the chili is still hot to allow it to melt.
  7. Sprinkle diced onions and drizzle mustard over each dog if desired.
  8. Transfer to a serving platter and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Leftover chili can be stored separately and reheated before serving to maintain bun texture.
