Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter in a frying pan over medium heat and sauté the diced onion and celery for 5 to 7 minutes until softened.
- Place 10 cups of cubed day-old bread in a large mixing bowl.
- Sprinkle 1 teaspoon dried thyme, 1 teaspoon dried sage, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper over the bread cubes and toss to coat.
- Pour the sautéed onion and celery mixture over the seasoned bread cubes and stir until evenly distributed.
- Gradually add 2 to 3 cups of vegetable or chicken broth, one cup at a time, stirring until the bread is moist but not soggy.
- Fold in 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley until incorporated.
- Transfer the mixture to an oven-safe baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the top is crisp.
Notes
For extra flavor, try adding cooked sausage or dried cranberries. Use stale day-old bread for best texture and adjust broth to avoid sogginess.
