Method
- Start by combining the warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture and oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
- Punch down the dough, divide into 12 equal pieces, shape into rounds, and tuck edges underneath.
- Arrange on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Score the tops of each roll with a sharp knife or lame.
- Bake for 25 minutes until golden brown.
- Optional: Brush with egg wash for a shiny crust.
Notes
Ensure your yeast is fresh for best rise. Do not skip the second rise to achieve airy texture. Use a thermometer for water temperature. Experiment with toppings.
