- In a large pot over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering.
- Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until onions are translucent.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef or Italian sausage and cook over medium-high heat for 7–10 minutes, breaking it up until browned.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, stirring well to combine.
- Season with dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper, mixing thoroughly.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 30 minutes to develop flavors.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed before serving.
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, add a splash of red wine while the sauce simmers. The sauce freezes well for up to 3 months.
