Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method
 

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering.
  2. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until onions are translucent.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef or Italian sausage and cook over medium-high heat for 7–10 minutes, breaking it up until browned.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, stirring well to combine.
  6. Season with dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper, mixing thoroughly.
  7. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 30 minutes to develop flavors.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed before serving.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, add a splash of red wine while the sauce simmers. The sauce freezes well for up to 3 months.
