Method
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut the rolled pastry into 3x5-inch rectangles.
- Place the cut pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
- In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, flour, and whisked eggs; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in softened butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Stack the pastry layers on a serving plate, spreading a generous layer of custard between each layer.
- Dust the top with powdered sugar and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight before serving.
Notes
Chill the assembled cake overnight for best flavor and texture.
