Ingredients

Main
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground turkey or another meat of choice
  • 1 can 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can 15 ounces kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can 15 ounces black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 red bell pepper diced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar optional

Equipment

  • Large pot or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Can opener

Method

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and cook for about 5 minutes until translucent, then stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef and ground turkey, cook over medium heat until browned, about 7-8 minutes, breaking the meat into smaller pieces.
  4. Stir in the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper, and cook for 1 minute to bloom the spices.
  5. Add the diced red bell pepper and cook for 5 minutes until slightly softened.
  6. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, and black beans, stirring to combine.
  7. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.
  8. If using, stir in the brown sugar to balance the acidity, taste and adjust seasoning before serving.

Notes

Letting the chili simmer longer can deepen the flavors; serve with sour cream, shredded cheese, and green onions.
