Ingredients

Main
  • 3-4 lbs. pork shoulder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup chicken broth

Equipment

  • Oven-safe Dutch oven or roasting pan with lid
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Forks for shredding pork

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Trim any excessive fat from the pork shoulder, leaving some for moisture.
  3. In a small bowl, mix smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to make the rub.
  4. Rub 2 tablespoons of olive oil all over the pork shoulder, then coat evenly with the spice rub.
  5. Heat a Dutch oven or roasting pan over medium-high heat and sear the pork shoulder on all sides until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Remove the pork and pour in 1 cup of chicken broth, then return the pork to the pot.
  7. Cover and roast in the preheated oven for 4 hours (240 minutes) until the meat is fork-tender.
  8. Let the pulled pork rest for 10-15 minutes, then shred it with two forks to serve.

Notes

Let the pulled pork rest for at least 10-15 minutes before shredding to keep the juices locked in.
