Ingredients

Main
  • 1 pound ground sausage mild or spicy
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded cheese cheddar or mozzarella
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • 9x5 inch loaf pan
  • Oven
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Brown 1 pound ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until no longer pink, about 7 minutes; drain and let cool.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C), 2 teaspoons sugar, and 2 teaspoons active dry yeast; let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups all-purpose flour and 2 teaspoons salt.
  4. Add cooled sausage, 1 cup shredded cheese, activated yeast mixture, and 2 tablespoons olive oil to the dry ingredients; stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  8. Bake in a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven for 30 minutes, until the crust is golden brown; cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Always let the bread cool before slicing to allow flavors to set and ensure clean cuts.
