Method
- Rinse the asparagus under cold water to remove any dirt. Trim the woody ends, about an inch from the bottom, to ensure they are tender and delicious.
- Fill a large pot with about two inches of water, ensuring the water level is below the steamer basket to prevent the asparagus from boiling.
- Bring the pot of water to a boil over medium-high heat, waiting until it bubbles vigorously.
- Once boiling, place the trimmed asparagus in the steamer basket in a single layer for even cooking.
- Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and steam for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on stalk thickness, until the asparagus is tender but still slightly crisp.
- Use tongs to test the asparagus; it should be bright green and easily pierced with a fork but not mushy.
- Carefully remove the asparagus and transfer it to a serving dish. Toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, and optional lemon juice for added zing.
- Serve the asparagus hot as a side dish immediately, garnishing with shaved Parmesan if desired.
Notes
For an extra burst of flavor, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top just before serving.
