- Start by assembling all the ingredients on your counter for ease of use.
- In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce and mirin over low heat.
- Stir in the sugar until fully dissolved, about 1-2 minutes.
- If using sake, add it now and stir to combine.
- Add grated ginger if desired, and stir.
- Gently heat the mixture for about 2-3 minutes, ensuring it does not boil.
- Remove from heat and let the sauce cool for about 5 minutes.
- Transfer to a serving bowl and serve with tempura or use as desired.
Notes
You can make the sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to one week. For an extra flavor, try adding a pinch of sesame seeds or chili flakes.
