Ingredients

Main
  • 1 box of vanilla cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 can 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can 12 oz evaporated milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Fresh fruit or chocolate shavings for topping optional

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Spoon or spatula

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the box cake mix, eggs, and water. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth and well combined.
  3. Pour the batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cake to cool in the baking dish for 10 minutes.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream until smooth.
  6. Poke holes all over the cooled cake using a fork. Slowly pour the tres leches mixture evenly over the cake and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. In a medium bowl, combine the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip until soft peaks form for the topping.
  8. Spread the whipped cream over the soaked cake. Top with fresh fruit or chocolate shavings if desired. Slice and serve chilled.

Notes

For best results, let the cake soak overnight to fully absorb the milk mixture and enhance the flavor.
