Ingredients

Main
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 5-6 tbsp cold water

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Pastry cutter or fork
  • Rolling pin
  • 9-inch pie pan
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour and 1 tsp salt.
  2. Add 1 cup Crisco shortening; cut in with a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add 5-6 tbsp cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until dough just comes together.
  4. Form the dough into a ball; divide in half and flatten each half into a disc.
  5. Wrap the discs in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc to fit a 9-inch pie pan, about 1/8-inch thick.
  7. Transfer the rolled-out crust to the pie pan, adjust edges, and flute if desired.
  8. Add your filling and bake at 425°F for 30 minutes until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

Always chill the dough before rolling to maintain a flaky texture and prevent shrinkage during baking.
