Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup brewed espresso or strong coffee
  • 1 cup milk dairy or non-dairy
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or sweetener to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream for topping optional

Equipment

  • Espresso machine or stovetop espresso maker
  • Milk frother or whisk
  • Small saucepan
  • Coffee mug
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Brew 1 cup of espresso or strong coffee using an espresso machine or stovetop espresso maker, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, gently heat 1 cup of milk until hot but not scalding, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 tablespoons of sugar until well combined.
  4. Add the cocoa and sugar mixture to the hot espresso and stir until fully dissolved.
  5. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  6. Froth the heated milk using a milk frother or whisk until creamy and slightly bubbly.
  7. Pour the frothed milk into the espresso mixture, tilting the mug slightly for a smooth pour.
  8. Top with whipped cream if desired and garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or chocolate shavings.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try using dark chocolate cocoa powder.
