- Rinse the apples, peel, core, and cut into 1-inch chunks ensuring uniform size.
- Heat the saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter until foaming subsides.
- Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves; stir for 30 seconds to toast spices.
- Add apple chunks, water or apple juice, and lemon juice; stir to combine.
- Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle simmer with small bubbles.
- Simmer uncovered for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally until apples are tender and sauce thickens.
- Check doneness by piercing an apple piece; it should be soft but hold shape.
- Remove from heat, taste, and adjust with salt or lemon juice as needed.
- Let cool for 3–5 minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle.
