Ingredients

Main
  • 8 cups filtered or cold water
  • 8 to 10 tea bags black tea, green tea, or herbal tea of your choice or 3 tablespoons loose leaf tea
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • Optional: fresh lemon slices fresh mint leaves, or honey for sweetening

Equipment

  • 2-quart glass pitcher or large glass jar
  • Measuring spoons
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Cheesecloth (optional)
  • Serving glasses or storage pitcher

Method

  1. Pour 8 cups of filtered or cold water into a 2-quart glass pitcher or large jar.
  2. Add 8 to 10 tea bags or 3 tablespoons loose leaf tea directly into the water.
  3. Cover the pitcher loosely with a lid, plate, or coffee filter to keep out debris.
  4. Place the pitcher in direct sunlight on a south-facing windowsill or patio.
  5. Steep undisturbed for 3 to 4 hours, checking color after 3 hours.
  6. Once the tea reaches a deep amber color, strain out tea bags or leaves through a fine mesh strainer.
  7. Press gently on the tea bags or leaves with a spoon to extract remaining liquid and discard them.
  8. Refrigerate or serve immediately over ice with optional lemon slices, mint leaves, or honey for sweetening.

Notes

Store sun tea refrigerated in an airtight container for up to one week; flavor is best within 3–4 days.
