Ingredients

Main
  • 2 slices bread sourdough, whole wheat, or multigrain
  • 4 ounces sliced turkey freshly sliced from the deli or high-quality packaged
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon whole grain mustard
  • 2 to 3 leaves fresh lettuce butter, romaine, or spinach
  • 1 medium slice tomato
  • 2 to 3 slices red onion
  • 1 slice cheese Swiss, cheddar, or provolone
  • 1 pinch sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh or dried herbs basil, oregano, or thyme

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Serrated bread knife
  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Butter knife or spreader
  • Parchment paper or sandwich wrapper

Method

  1. Select two slices of sturdy bread for your sandwich.
  2. Toast the bread on medium-light for 1 to 2 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon mayonnaise with 1 teaspoon whole grain mustard and mix until smooth.
  4. Spread half of the condiment mixture on each slice of toasted bread.
  5. Layer 2 to 3 lettuce leaves on one slice of bread.
  6. Arrange 4 ounces of sliced turkey evenly over the lettuce.
  7. Top with tomato slice, red onion slices, and cheese slice, in that order.
  8. Season with a pinch of sea salt, cracked black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon herbs.
  9. Place the second bread slice on top, press gently, and cut diagonally into two halves.

Notes

Always toast the bread to maintain crispness and prevent sogginess.
