Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces whiskey bourbon or rye preferred
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice freshly squeezed, not bottled
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 6 to 8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 cup ice plus more for serving

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Bar muddler or wooden spoon
  • Jigger
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Rocks glass or lowball glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Cutting board and knife

Method

  1. Fill a rocks glass with ice and set aside to chill.
  2. Gently tear the mint leaves and place them in a cocktail shaker.
  3. Muddle the mint for 3 to 4 seconds to release aromatic oils without bruising too much.
  4. Add whiskey and fresh lemon juice to the shaker.
  5. Pour in the simple syrup and add one cup of ice to the shaker.
  6. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 10 to 12 seconds.
  7. Strain the mixture into the chilled rocks glass over fresh ice.
  8. Garnish with a slapped mint sprig and serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t skip the fresh ice in the serving glass; it keeps the cocktail cold longer and prevents dilution.
